Great Eastern eyes RM800m in new business premiums

No comments May 23rd, 2009

KUALA LUMPUR: Great Eastern Life Assurance (M) Bhd is targeting a 27% growth in new business premiums to RM800mil this year, on the back of a strong first quarter and upcoming tie-up to sell insurance products through OCBC Bank (M) Bhd’s outlets.

“We are planning to launch our bancassurance business with OCBC Bank within three months,’’ director and chief executive officer Koh Yaw Hui told reporters at the graduation ceremony of the firm’s life planning advisors (LPAs) yesterday.

Great Eastern Malaysia is taking the advantage of the government’s recent move to allow foreign-owned life insurers to sell their products through foreign banks.

The firm is a unit of Singapore-based Great Eastern Holdings Ltd, which in turn is owned by Overseas-Chinese Banking Corp Ltd.

“The bancassurance business will give us additional distribution channel for our products,’’ Koh said.

Great Eastern Malaysia reported a 59% growth in new business premiums in the first quarter to RM170mil, up from RM107mil in the previous corresponding period. The increase was partly attributed to strong demand for new products launched during the quarter.

“We expect the whole industry to post positive growth in the first quarter, despite the weak economic condition during the period,’’ Koh said.

To further enhance its business, the firm is embarking on a project to strengthen its distribution channels.

Great Eastern Malaysia has assets in excess of RM37bil, over 2.8 million policies in force, 24 branch offices and a network of 17,000 agents nationwide.

“Professional agents are the driving force in distributing out products,’’ Koh said. To bolster its agents’ capability, the firm is targeting to have 3,000 agents completing their LPA course by end-2010.

To date, 600 have completed the eight-module training to become certified LPAs. Koh said the LPA graduates’ productivity rate was 2.5 times compared with the company’s average.

To serve its customers better, Great Eastern is also planning to open at least two new branches in the next two to three years, with one in Petaling Jaya and the other in Seberang Jaya, Penang.

Takaful provider upbeat on premium income

It may account for 20% of HSBC Islamic banking revenue in 2 years

KUALA LUMPUR: Takaful premium income is expected to contribute 20% to HSBC Amanah Malaysia Bhd’s revenue by 2011, according to HSBC Amanah Takaful (Malaysia) Sdn Bhd chief executive officer Zainudin Ishak.

“At the moment our contribution to the group is insignificant,’’ he told reporters at briefing on a survey conducted by HSBC Insurance (Asia Pacific) Holdings Ltd yesterday.

HSBC Amanah Takaful was registered in August 2006 and the company had recently turned profitable, Zainudin said, adding that new regular premium income at the takaful operator had doubled to RM30mil from RM15mil recorded six months ago.

Zainudin said he expected the “momentum” to continue for the rest of the year, despite concerns that the economic slowdown would limit consumers’ demand for insurance products.

The survey by HSBC Insurance showed that two of the most specific long-term wealth aspirations for Malaysians are related to financial security in retirement and education funding for children.

One of the obstacles to achieve this, however, is the “lack of investment instruments with good returns” in the current market conditions.

Zainudin said HSBC Amanah Takaful intended to leverage on the strength of the group’s brand name, and the fact that HSBC had been in Malaysia for the past 125 years.

“HSBC is a trusted brand name in Malaysia and we have various takaful products to cater to local needs,’’ he said.

The new products were being developed for the Malaysian market through the group’s global expertise in Islamic finance, Zainudin added.

HSBC Amanah is the Islamic banking arm of HSBC Bank Malaysia Bhd. It has four stand-alone branches, coupled with the parent bank’s 40 outlets across the country.

Malam tadi saya dah install Windows 7 dalam laptop saya. Saya dah buat satu partition space lebih kurang 17GB pastu install benda tu yang saya download daripada internet.

1st time install tu laptop windows saya crash-blue screen.. Saya dah risau dah takut tak boleh install cam dulu masa tengah beta version. Alhamdulillah, after that, saya try install sekali lagi, takde masalah.

So, for time being ni tengah explore la Windows 7. Yang confirm kalau compare ngan Vista, Windows 7 lagi laju. Dari yang saya baca Microsoft akan release full version on this mid year dan sebelum tu Vista SP2 akan dikeluarkan jugak. So, so far tengok Windows 7 ni OK la..

Banyak sites yang cerita pasal Windows 7 nih. Tapi saya suka  site nih.

Jom kita sama-sama explore Windows 7!

PruBSN: Take-up rate for Takaful products still low

No comments May 16th, 2009

Johor: The take-up rate for takaful products is still low in the country due to misperception, according to Prudential-BSN Takaful Bhd (PruBSN) chief executive officer Mohamad Salihuddin Ahmad.

To date, the take-up rate was only 7.7 percent compared to 40 percent for conventional life insurance products, he said.

This, Salihuddin said, could be due to the misperception that takaful products were only for Muslims only.

“Takaful is not a product for Muslims only and since we started business more than two years ago, we have adopted takaful for all concepts,” he told reporters after launching the PruBSN Johor Baharu business centre here Thursday.

However, PruBSN, a joint venture between Prudential Plc and Bank Simpanan Nasional, did not see the misperception as a setback but an opportunity to explore, he said.

With more than half of its 10,000 agents being non-Muslims, Salihuddin was optimistic that PruBSN could grow further and capture a bigger share of the non-Muslim market.

At present, 35 percent of its more than 216,000 policyholders are non-Muslims, he said.

“Unlike conventional insurance, takaful products are Syariah-compliant and the best way to go as they propagate transparency,” he added.

PruBSN, which has received about RM300 million in regular contributions from policyholders, planned to open five more business centres nationwide this year.

Salihuddin said that between RM500,000 and RM1 million will be invested in each business centre, depending on the size and renovations to be made.

He said the company decided to open the Johor Baharu business centre as it expects an upswing in development with the Iskandar Malaysia project, and it currently has 239 agents servicing customers in the state.

Its other business centre was opened recently in Shah Alam, Selangor, while its marketing and administrative centre is located in Wangsa Maju, Kuala Lumpur.- Bernama

HLA group MD tipped to helm Prudential

No comments May 15th, 2009

PETALING JAYA: Hong Leong Assurance Bhd (HLA) group managing director (MD) and chief executive officer (CEO) Charlie E. Oropeza is tipped to become Prudential Assurance Malaysia Bhd’s (PAMB) new CEO.

It is learnt that his last day at Hong Leong Assurance will be at the end of this month.

He will head Prudential Assurance next month pending approval from Bank Negara.

According to sources, HLA’s chief operating officer (life division) Loh Guat Lan would for the time being oversee the operations of the company.

HLA has not at the moment identified any suitable candidate to replace Oropeza.

There had been talk of late that since Bill Lisle, the former CEO of PAMB, jumped ship to join Aviva Asia as its regional director, PAMB had two candidates in mind – Oropeza and AIA Bhd CEO Khor Hock Seng.

Oropeza was picked to helm PAMB due to his expertise and vast experience in regional markets, one source said. Prior to joining HLA, he was the chief executive of Prudential Life Assurance Indonesia and the CEO of Prudential Vietnam Assurance.

He started his career with Allstate Insurance Co, United States in 1981.

A graduate of La Salle University and University of New Haven in the United States, Oropeza has more than 25 years of experience in international life and general insurance, mutual funds and consumer finance.

He assumed the position of group MD and CEO of HLA on July 10, 2007.

In view of liberalisation and growing competition in the financial services industry, many insurers are roping in experienced CEOs and other senior executives.

PAMB posted new business annual premium equivalent (NBAPE) (with life insurance sales and takaful contributions combined) of RM659mil for the financial year ended Dec 31, 2008, a 9% increase from 2007.

NBAPE consists of regular premium sales plus one-tenth of single premium insurance sales.
