IT PAYS to regularly review your medical insurance policy as this is one way of ensuring you are adequately covered, advises Mohd Del Mustafar Azlan, executive wealth manager of Prudential Assurance Malaysia Berhad.

“The majority of us recognise the importance of regular health checks but when it comes to keeping tabs on our insurance needs, we usually put this off or don’t see the importance or urgency.

“Many tend to think what they have is enough. However, what they don’t realise is that with healthcare costs continuing to increase, chances are the medical policies that they purchased years ago may no longer be sufficient to meet current as well as future needs,” he says.

Mohd Del Mustafar Azlan.

As such, he suggests that Edward Lee and wife Vivienne Ngiu take time to re-evaluate their existing medical plans and consider upgrading if the need arises.

“Both first bought their medical policies more than 10 years ago. They have not reviewed their coverage since. I would strongly encourage them to do that now.

“It is very important for Edward and Vivienne, who are self-employed, to insure themselves adequately, so that they will never need to fork out their own money for medical bills,” adds Mohd Del.

For couples like Surin Jesuthasan, his wife Irene Lim, and Edward and Vivienne, who are conscious about their physical wellbeing, Mohd Del believes that they will find Prudential’s latest medical plan appealing.

This is because PRUhealth comes with a unique feature called No Claims Bonus, which gives them up to RM500 in bonuses per annum when they do not make any medical claims during a year. “Quite simply, PRUhealth rewards you for staying healthy and at the same time, helps take care of your medical bills when you are not,” he says.

Available as a rider to be attached to the investment-linked plans sold by Prudential – PRUlink assurance plan or PRUlink education plan – PRUhealth covers you up to age 100 for medical expenses incurred on hospitalisation, surgeries or outpatient treatment due to sickness or accident.

It is also probably the only medical plan in the market that gives you the option to remove the annual claims limit to enjoy enhanced protection.

HLA eyes RM150m from new plan

KUALA LUMPUR: Hong Leong Assurance Bhd (HLA) is projecting its latest life product HLA Cash Builder to generate RM150mil in first year annual premium by February. Since its soft launch about a month ago, HLA Cash Builder has accumulated a premium of RM10mil.

The plan offers policyholders an alternative, more flexible insurance plan that focuses on building income rather than the conventional lump sum payment.

“With the uncertainty of the markets lately, more Malaysians need security and the guarantee of reduced risks when investing their money. This is where our Cash Builder programme comes in,” said HLA chief operating officer (life division) Loh Guat Lan.

According to Loh, the plan offers four different riders and customers will be able to mix and match the riders according to their individual preferences.

For instance, policyholders may enjoy yearly income from as early as one year and the guaranteed yearly income can be as high as 20% per year.

Additionally, the HLA Cash Builder allows one to pay for six or 10 years with coverage of up to 35 years.

“Conventional insurance policies offer only one product for one skill. Our mix and match concept of four riders will create a more viable form of insurance for Malaysians,” said Loh.

A recent survey by Watson Wyatt, a human capital consulting firm, revealed that almost 75% of Malaysians believe that their savings in the Employees Provident Fund will not suffice in retirement.

Loh said the Cash Builder’s guarantee of yearly income upon retirement for investors would help resolve this problem.

The Cash Builder plan is geared primarily for retirees and young parents intending to save for their children’s education

Early advice- The Star report

PRUDENTIAL executive wealth planner Goh Suet Peng cannot stress enough the need to buy medical insurance when one is still young and healthy.

“Getting yourself insured early on in your life while you are in good health certainly has its benefits. For a start, you do not need to worry about being turned down by your insurance company due to age or health reasons. Secondly, the premium rates are a lot cheaper when you come in at a younger age,” says Goh.

Her advice to Nikki Goh, 24, is simple. “In addition to the life insurance policy that she currently owns, Nikki should also start putting aside a small amount to buy a medical insurance plan. She clearly understands the importance of such a protection and buying a medical insurance plan now at her age will make it more affordable.”

She says a medical insurance plan like PRUhealth, which Prudential Assurance Malaysia Berhad recently launched, would be ideal for Nikki who takes good care of her health, as it has a unique annual no claims bonus (NCB) that pays up to RM500 in bonuses annually as long as she does not make any medical claims from her policy during a year.

The NCB amount which Nikki will receive will depend on the plan that she has selected.

“Besides rewarding customers when they are healthy, PRUhealth also provides comprehensive coverage up to age 100 to help take care of their medical bills when they need it most,” she says, adding that this product is probably the only medical plan that comes with the option to allow customers to remove the annual claims limit to enjoy enhanced protection.

For 26-year-old Charles Chen, Goh suggests that apart from the need to cut down on his smoking, it is crucial that he reviews his existing life and medical insurance coverage periodically.

“Charles is lucky to have parents who have bought him insurance plans. As he grows older, earns more and his needs change, perhaps like getting married or having children, he will have to review and upgrade his insurance plans accordingly. For now, he needs to check if he is sufficiently covered under his existing medical insurance plan especially given the increasing cost of quality medical care. With healthcare costs continuing to outpace general inflation rate, chances are the plan that he bought years ago is unlikely to be enough to meet future needs,” she points out.

Jayne Gomes, 23, is another fortunate individual whose medical insurance policy was bought for her by her parents when she was in her teens. She leads a relatively healthy life by taking some health supplements and going to the gym regularly. Goh’s advice to her is similar to Chen – Gomes should review her medical insurance plan at least on an annual basis to ensure that she has adequate protection.

Protect yourself and your liabilities

Comment by TAY HAN CHONG-The Star

PAYING yourself first will ensure that there is savings, but that may not be sufficient. Sure, it provides the resources for one to better plan for the future but on its own, savings is very low yielding though it is liquid and “safe”.

Just like having a good workout physically, we cannot kickstart from a sedentary lifestyle straight to running a marathon. It takes a bit of building up before one can reach a certain level of fitness.

My father-in-law is a personification of “good life”, in the traditional Chinese sense. After sustaining a spinal injury at work, he swapped roles with my mother-in-law and became the stay-home dad. He kept himself active for 20 years looking after the home, his girls and ailing mother. However with the daughters grown up and married, his lifestyle has gone from active to sedentary. Unfortunately, his appetite remains hearty despite attempts to change his eating habits, and naturally his weight has piled on.

As luck would have it, he had problems with his insurance application earlier this year and through the urging (and nagging) of his wife and daughters he became determined to re-gain his fitness. Being a proud man, he rejected help from my wife’s ex-personal trainer. However, in his eagerness he pushed himself too hard physically and injured his bad back and shoulders as well. The next three months was thus spent undergoing physiotherapy.

Two lessons from this – (1) Age issue aside, he did not gradually build up his foundation before attempting more advance and strenuous exercise, thus straining himself. And (2) Don’t wait till it’s too late to get started.

Financial or money workout is not any different. I am encouraged to move beyond savings, the core focus of my money workout #1 – paying yourself first, to other aspects of money workout to provide a full spectrum of financial advice.

So to build a good foundation of financial strength, I shall start from protection. Protection is, in my mind, the basic level of wealth management. This is even before one embarks on investing to grow one’s wealth. Let’s start with a cliché – it is not about someone dying, it is about their loved ones continuing on with their lives.

Many people do not know what policies or coverage they have. Some don’t even bother to insure themselves because they think insurance is a waste of money! And to dismiss all the constant hounding from insurance agents, we have even perfected the script “got enough insurance already la” which rolls off our tongues without batting an eyelid. Many a times, we convinced ourselves so well that we really don’t know otherwise.

It is all about contingencies and with life’s uncertain twists and turns, who is to know what might happen? It is therefore important to ensure that we have adequate protection as it provides peace of mind knowing that if anything were to happen, our loved ones will not be left out in the cold.

When should one buy insurance? One should and could only buy insurance when one doesn’t need it, yet! When you need insurance, you will not be able to purchase it anymore. Pre-exisiting conditions are normally excluded from coverage. So today is the best day to start, protection planning is all about meeting contingencies. It’s everything about living too long, dying too young, or living with impaired health.

Here’s my guide: Money Workout #2 – Protect Yourself. How do we start?

Life coverage is about providing for loved ones in case of death or total permanent disability. How much life coverage is sufficient? I don’t subscribe to the rule of thumb that some insurance salespeople use to frighten you with – that is for coverage to be about 10 years of one’s income. It probably would be closer to 5 years of one’s expenditure (and not income). Hopefully after 5 years, the family would have adjusted to the loss and re-established their lifestyle without the deceased.

More often than not, the insurance provides for 5 years while other forms of savings and investments can also provide for a few more years of expense. If more coverage is needed, it might be boosted based on one’s ability to pay the additional premium or, alternatively consider term insurance. So if you spend RM5,000 a month or RM60,000 per year, the suggested minimum life insurance is RM300,000. There is no such thing as too much coverage, but there is the minimum amount that would be considered sufficient.

Critical Illness is about living with impaired heath. A definite must-have is critical illness rider to life insurance which usually covers the common illnesses such as heart attack, stroke and diabetes. When one is suffering from such critical illnesses, it is already tough on the family particularly if one is also the bread winner. Not to mention the sudden spike in medical costs which can increase the normal monthly expenses by many folds. Generally, I would imagine that the minimum amount needed would be in the range of RM300,000-RM500,000, especially if you take into consideration long-drawn illnesses such as kidney failure or a heart attack that may result in impaired health (and perhaps loss of income and job).

While on the topic insurance, I shall quickly jump into Money Workout #3 – Protect against your liabilities. This is about protecting yourself against outstanding liabilities, should anything happen to you. While we may provide for our loved ones, sometimes we forget that we have debts and liabilities which would be transferred to our loved ones as well. In this case, I provide one clear cut example.

Liabilities are what we owe others. And usually the largest debt that one has is the mortgage. And since most people have only one house, the mortgage is usually on the house that we call home. So it is important to make sure that if anything should happen to you, your biggest liability is totally paid off to avoid the burden on the family. Generally as our debts are repaid, this liability also falls over time, so the protection needs to be reducing in coverage over time. The bottom line is to have insurance that matches one’s liability closely. In this aspect, more is not necessary but less would be a burden.

Buying an insurance can be a taboo for some, since many tend to believe mishaps happen only to “others”. But a joke I came across smacks of reality: Needing insurance is like needing a parachute. If it wasn’t there the first time, chances are you won’t be needing it again.

I consider insurance to be the foundation of one’s overall financial wellness, even before embarking on investing. This provides a peace of mind for you and your family. Just look at the faces of your children and you will know that you must build this foundation well. Once done, and the remaining money can be better used to make more money, provided you have the risk appetite.

By DALJIT DHESI-The Star

PETALING JAYA: Malaysian Assurance Alliance Bhd (MAA Assurance) executive vice-president for general corporate client and schemes David Tan is tipped to be the new chief executive officer of Uni.Asia General Insurance Bhd.

According to sources, Tan would very soon be joining the company pending Bank Negara’s approval. It is learnt that he is still serving MAA Assurance.

In March, Mohd Fauzi Yaakub resigned as CEO of Uni.Asia General after helming the company for only a few months. For the time being, acting chief operating officer Habshah Mohamed is overseeing the company’s operations.

Uni.Asia General, a source said, had been scouting for a CEO since Fauzi’s departure and Tan, whose vast experience in the general insurance business, was a valuable one and was chosen for the job.

Uni.Asia General provides a wide array of general insurance business like motor, personal, health, group personal accident, home, travel, as well as marine, aviation, and engineering products.

For the financial year ended March 31, 2009 (FY09), the company posted a 17.4% growth in gross premiums to RM410.4mil compared with RM349.5mil in FY08.

Its market share for the period increased to 3.7% from 3.3% previously and it is now ranked 10th in terms of gross direct premiums written.

Despite the improvement in gross premiums, Uni.Asia General registered a pre-tax loss of RM5.8mil compared with a pre-tax profit of RM24.1mil previously, due to higher claims payout and lower investment returns caused by poor stock market performance.

Pengalaman trip Penang/Kedah

No comments August 16th, 2009

Mus’ab banyak le appointment dia..dia ade deliver beberapa polisi kat Kulim.

Hari Sabtu, selain dari personal matter, aku ade jugak deliver polisi kat kawan lama kat Kuala Ketil. Lepas tu terus pegi Sungai Petani untuk settlekan urusan booth kat Tesco Sungai Petani. Dah settle semua, Mus’ab nak balik malam Ahad tu jugak sebab ade appointment penting di KL pada pagi Ahad. So, Mus drive le dari rumah sewa kitorang kat Bayan Lepas sampai KL. Lebih kurang pukul 1.00 pagi kitorang sampai kat R&R Tapah..Aku yang tidur sepanjang perjalanan dah terjaga masa tu. Tetiba, Mus cakap kete tak boleh masuk gear..Sudah!!!.. Lepas 2-3 kali try off dan start balik tak boleh masuk gear jugak.

Kitorang cool down kejap dengan pegi bilik air. Lepas tu datang balik-try start dan harap-harap kete boleh masuk gear..Malangnya, kete tu tak leh masuk gear jugak. Kitorang dah risau. Maybe sebab gear box dah rosak..:-(* Waaaaaa…Last sekali, aku tepon PlusLine mintak bantuan.
So dia tak boleh buat abang..Aku tanya dia kalau nak towing sampai mana? Dia cakap sampai tol Bidor jee..Emm..Mus cakap baik tak payah sebab sana takde ape.. Sini bole jugak makan-makan..orang pun ramai. So, kitorang decide tak tow dengan Plus. Aku call insuran kete aku; Axa- tanya pasal towing. Lepas bagi info kete semua, dalam masa 24 minit dia call balik. Dia bagitau yang ade towing service berdekatan. Kos dia nak towing dari Tapah ke Shah Alam ialah RM600. Insuran cover RM200, so aku kena bayar RM400. Waaaaa….Aku tanya takleh kurang ke? Dia cakap tak boleh sebab itu dah standard price dan tambah-tambah belah malam. So, lepas discuss ngan Mus, aku decide nak towing esok pagi je..kos murah RM100..hehe.. So malam tu kitorang tido dalam kete. Pagi esok aku call Axa balik mintak towing.

Itulah pengalaman berharga kitorang trip ke Penang dan Kedah. Sampai aku tulis post nih kete masih lagi kat workshop tengah repair. Aku dah 4 hari cuti tak pegi opis.:((
